John Carroll Koppin, a 22-year-old police officer with the Miami Beach Police Department, tragically lost his life on December 26, 1984. Officer Koppin was accidentally shot and killed when his service revolver discharged while he was cleaning it at his residence on North Hibiscus Drive. The bullet struck him in the leg, severing his femoral artery, which led to his death due to severe blood loss.
