Cornelius Rain, a 40-year-old white male, met a tragic end on February 21, 1918, in Gainesville, Florida. Deputy Sheriff Rain was attempting to arrest a fugitive wanted for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Charles McCraw in Berrien County, Georgia. The fugitive had killed Deputy McCraw while the latter was trying to arrest him for failing to register for the World War I draft.
