On the evening of April 7, 2015, in Augusta, Georgia, John Lee Jones, a 31-year-old Black / African American man, was with friends on Second Avenue when his life was cut short. A man, later identified as Carl Jones, who is not related to the victim, approached the group under the belief that someone had taken his cell phone. This mistaken belief led to a fatal confrontation, during which Carl Jones shot John Lee Jones in the back.
