James Melvin Dismukes, a 45-year-old male who was Black, was killed in the early hours of July 19, 2018, in Ford Heights, Illinois. Not long before dawn, deputies were sent out after reports of gunfire and found him unresponsive in the 1400 block of East 16th Street, the street still holding that stunned quiet that follows sudden violence. He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving investigators to reconstruct what happened in the darkness and why he ended up there when the shots rang out.
