Robert Vernon Steagall Jr., a 28-year-old Caucasian male, tragically lost his life on January 7, 1973, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were the first civilian victims of a sniper attack carried out by Mark Essex, a Black Panther militant. The couple was found embraced in a hallway of the Howard Johnson Hotel, where Robert was shot in the head and Elizabeth was shot in the eye.
