On August 26, 1907, Patrolman George W. Shuman, aged 47, of the South Bethlehem Borough Police Department in Pennsylvania, was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man named William Handy in the vicinity of Second Street and Adams Street, near the Reading Railway. Patrolman Shuman, a United States Navy veteran, had served with the South Bethlehem Police Department for 13 years. He was survived by his wife, adopted daughter, brother, and sister.
