Deputy Sheriff John Boykin, aged 28, was shot and killed on May 6, 1907, in Orange, Texas. Boykin was attempting to arrest a bartender for abusing a woman at a saloon on April 20, 1907. During the altercation, Boykin shot and wounded the bartender, who was subsequently arrested. However, Boykin was also arrested by a constable and had to post a $500 bond pending an examining trial, a common practice at the time.
