Matthew Wayne Keel, a 55-year-old man from Ocala, Florida, was found dead in his home on April 9, 2025. His death occurred on the same day he was scheduled to be sentenced in court for multiple counts of animal cruelty. Keel had pleaded no contest to 43 charges, including 23 counts of aggravated animal cruelty and 20 counts of animal cruelty. His plea agreement included a prison sentence of 43 months, followed by two years of house arrest and two years of probation.
Additionally, he had agreed to perform 400 hours of community service and was prohibited from owning or caring for animals.
Keel's legal troubles stemmed from a disturbing case in which authorities discovered 53 dogs living in deplorable conditions inside his home. The animals were confined to crates, covered in their own feces, and suffering from severe health issues. Some of the dogs were emaciated, while others had significant dental problems. The investigation began after Marion County Animal Services received a tip about the conditions in Keel's residence. Upon visiting the property, officials found the dogs in unsanitary conditions, prompting an emergency petition to remove them from his care.
On the morning of April 9, Keel failed to appear for his sentencing hearing, leading the judge to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. Later that day, a friend of Keel contacted the Marion County Sheriff's Office after noticing that he appeared to be unconscious inside his home. When law enforcement arrived, they detected a strong odor emanating from the residence, prompting the involvement of a HAZMAT team. Once the home was deemed safe to enter, officers discovered Keel's deceased body on the kitchen floor. Authorities believe that he died by suicide.
Keel's death is currently under investigation, but no suspects or arrests have been reported in connection with the case. His passing marks the tragic end of a legal battle that had drawn significant attention due to the severity of the animal cruelty charges against him. The rescued dogs were placed under the care of Marion County Animal Services, where they received medical treatment and were eventually rehomed.
