Ejaash Bail Carter, a 46-year-old man, was fatally shot on March 30, 2025, in Miami Gardens, Florida. The incident occurred aboard a Miami-Dade Transit bus during the early hours of the morning, around 3 a.m. Carter was one of two victims in the shooting, alongside 44-year-old Lonnie Stephenwade Harley. The shooting took place near Northwest 7th Avenue and 183rd Street, outside a shopping plaza.
Both victims were airlifted to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital in critical condition but were later pronounced dead.
The shooting stemmed from a disturbance involving the bus driver and passengers. Authorities reported that the driver refused to allow a man to board the bus with a Citi bike, which he believed was stolen. When the passenger reached into a bag, the driver fired his weapon, striking both Carter and Harley. A witness onboard the bus stated that the driver fired six shots, hitting the man attempting to board and Carter, who was an innocent bystander. Carter was likely struck by a stray bullet.
The bus driver, identified as Oshane Griffiths, was detained for questioning but has not been charged. Miami-Dade Transit placed Griffiths on administrative leave and initiated the termination process, as transit employees are prohibited from carrying firearms while on duty. Griffiths later resigned from his position. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office is investigating the case, but as of now, no charges have been filed against Griffiths.
Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the nature of the verbal dispute and why Griffiths was armed. The Transport Workers Union Local 291, which represents Miami-Dade County transit employees, has expressed its commitment to supporting its members and the community while working to prevent similar tragedies.
