On the evening of February 8, 2025, 20-year-old Delilah Ruiz, a white female, was fatally shot outside her home in Homestead, Florida. The tragic incident unfolded following a heated dispute between Ruiz and her ex-boyfriend, 19-year-old Elijah Clarke, over money. According to investigators, Ruiz had received a notification that Clarke had transferred funds from their shared Cash App account.
Fearing that he would drain their remaining balance, she quickly transferred the remaining $37 to a friend. Shortly thereafter, Clarke arrived at Ruiz’s residence, escalating the confrontation.
Witnesses reported that Ruiz, accompanied by two friends, confronted Clarke outside her home. In an attempt to defend herself, she armed herself with pepper spray and used it against Clarke. However, the situation quickly turned deadly when Clarke retrieved a black handgun from a fanny pack, loaded a round into the chamber, and fired two shots as Ruiz attempted to flee. One of the bullets struck Ruiz in the left side of her back, causing her to collapse. Despite emergency medical personnel’s efforts, Ruiz was pronounced dead at Memorial Regional Hospital shortly after 8:30 p.m.
Following the shooting, Clarke fled the scene in a black Lexus IS350 driven by 18-year-old Christopher Valdes, a white male. Authorities launched a manhunt, leading to Clarke’s arrest in Houston, Texas, on February 11, 2025. He was accompanied by 19-year-old Rafael Torralba, a white male, and 17-year-old Angelina Valledor, a white female, both of whom were charged with hindering apprehension and prosecution. Valdes was apprehended in Miramar, Florida, on February 10, 2025, and charged as an accessory after the fact.
Ruiz’s family had long expressed concerns about her relationship with Clarke, but they never imagined it would end in such a violent manner. Her aunt, Jennifer Calanni, voiced her grief and anger, stating that the suspects should not be allowed to live their lives freely when Ruiz no longer had that opportunity. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence, including surveillance footage from Ruiz’s home that captured crucial moments of the fatal encounter.
