On January 19, 2025, 31-year-old African American male Davon Wood of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was fatally shot during a gathering in Boynton Beach. The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. near the 500 block of Northeast Second Street, where an altercation between two individuals escalated into gunfire. Upon arrival, Boynton Beach Police found five individuals with gunshot wounds; a sixth victim later arrived at a hospital independently.
Wood succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital.
The other victims included James Laurent, 36, of Lake Worth; Josue Jean, 34, of Boynton Beach; Keith Clemons, 38, of Port St. Lucie; Derrick Dorsonne, 24, of Delray Beach; and Jephte Matilus, 32, of Delray Beach. Laurent and Jean remained hospitalized in stable condition, while Clemons, Dorsonne, and Matilus were treated and released.
In March 2025, Boynton Beach Police concluded that Davon Wood was the primary aggressor in the incident. Based on collected evidence and witness statements, the case met the criteria for Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which permits the use of deadly force if an individual reasonably believes it necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm. Consequently, no arrests have been made, though the investigation remains active.
