Desean Menelas, a 20-year-old African American male from Boynton Beach, FL, tragically lost his life on November 19, 2017, in a fatal shooting at Caloosa Park. The incident occurred during a drug-related transaction that turned violent. Menelas was meeting with two individuals who intended to purchase marijuana from him. Thal was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals South Florida Regional Task Force during a traffic stop in West Palm Beach. He was charged with first-degree murder with a firearm. The crime scene investigation revealed nine spent shell casings from two different firearms, a .45-caliber and a 9mm.

Additionally, Thal's social media activity, which included images of him with firearms and large sums of money, provided further evidence linking him to the crime. The case was presented to a grand jury, and Thal was charged as an adult due to the severity of the crime.
