On the evening of Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, the holiday calm was shattered in Fort Wayne, Indiana, by reports of gunfire. Police responded to calls of shots fired near the intersection of West Fourth and Wells streets and discovered a man who had been shot in the 1600 block of Wells Street. Paramedics and first responders pronounced him deceased at the scene. The Allen County Coroner’s Office later identified the victim as Philip Michael Rhinehart, a 39-year-old White man from Fort Wayne. An autopsy confirmed his cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest, and his manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Philip Rhinehart was remembered by his community as a man with deep roots in the area. Born in Fort Wayne, he had attended Meadowbrook Elementary and New Haven High School. He spent years working in the construction industry and was known for his mechanical aptitude and passion for working on cars.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his mother, grandmother, sisters, and sons, leaving behind a grieving family that had already suffered loss, as his fiancée had preceded him in death.
The investigation into Rhinehart’s killing moved swiftly. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators worked through the holiday to piece together the events of that evening. Within a day, their work led to a significant breakthrough. On December 26, 2024, the Fort Wayne Police Department announced that two men had been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Police arrested 46-year-old Chad Kinney and 47-year-old Shawn Christopher Williams. Both men were preliminarily charged with murder.
Court records later revealed that both men were caught on camera during the shooting, and documents identified Kinney as the shooter. The cases against the two men proceeded through the Allen County court system. Shawn Williams went to trial, and in January 2026, after two and a half days of testimony, a jury found him guilty of murder. Chad Kinney’s case followed a different path, and he ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge of felony murder.
In March 2026, both men were sentenced for their roles in Philip Rhinehart’s death. An Allen Superior Court judge sentenced Shawn Williams to 65 years in prison, the maximum sentence for his conviction. Chad Kinney was sentenced to 45 years in prison as part of his plea agreement. With the convictions and sentencings, the case was officially closed as of March 2026.
