On January 18, 2025, 19-year-old Blake A. Burton, a male resident of Columbus, Texas, was fatally shot in the early hours of the morning. Around 1:00 a.m., Columbus Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1100 block of Walnut Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Blake A. Burton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Columbus Community Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Approximately two hours later, at about 2:55 a.m., deputies from the Colorado County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle suspected to be connected to the shooting. Inside the vehicle were 17-year-old Kristopher C. Avila of Eagle Lake, 21-year-old Gasaan Young-Johnson of Houston, and an unnamed juvenile. Initially, Avila and Young-Johnson were arrested on unrelated charges. Subsequent investigations led to all three individuals being charged with murder by the Columbus Police Department.
