In the early hours of September 29, 2024, the Columbus Police Department responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the 1600 block of Fannin Street in Columbus, Texas. Upon arrival, officers found 26-year-old KeAndre M. Hurd suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Columbus Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
During the investigation, authorities identified 21-year-old Columbus resident Nijay Johnson as the suspect. A warrant for his arrest on charges of murder was issued by Municipal Court Judge Leonard Peters. Later that day, Johnson turned himself in to the Columbus Police Department and was subsequently booked into the Colorado County Detention Center. As of October 2, 2024, he remained in custody with bond set at $150,000. The motive for the shooting has not been disclosed, and the investigation is ongoing. Both Hurd and Johnson were alumni of Columbus High School, graduating in 2017 and 2022, respectively. During their time at the school, they were active members of the Cardinal basketball and football teams. Hurd was known for his good manners, loving nature, and spontaneity. He had a passion for music, photography, and horses, and was employed at BMI in Schulenburg, Texas, while pursuing his Commercial Driver's License (CDL). On May 8, 2024, he welcomed his son, Kycion, into the world, a moment he described as the happiest day of his life.
In the wake of Hurd's tragic death, the community has rallied to support his family. A fundraiser was organized to assist with funeral and burial expenses, including a benefit event held on October 13 at Montezuma Park in Columbus. Additionally, a memorial service was scheduled, with visitation on October 18 and a funeral service on October 19 at New Greater Smith Chapel Baptist Church, followed by interment at Willing-Workers Cemetery. Friends, family, and community members continue to mourn the loss of a young man remembered for his determination, talent, and the joy he brought to those around him.
