Mexia police received multiple calls about a shooting starting at 6:31 a.m., but initial reports did not provide a precise location. At 6:38 a.m., a call directed officers to the scene, where they discovered Mitchell had been shot.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation, Mexia police arrested 27-year-old Emaja Holmes, a resident of Teague, Texas, in connection with the shooting. Holmes was taken into custody without incident at approximately 11:19 a.m. on January 27, 2025. He was transported to the Limestone County Jail, where he was booked on charges of murder. Additionally, Holmes faced a motion to revoke probation warrant.
