On December 20, 1970, Joe M. Fletcher, a 59-year-old white male service station operator from Vidalia, Georgia, was murdered. His death was part of a series of violent crimes committed across the southeastern United States during that period. Fletcher's murder was later linked to William Pierce Jr., a serial killer known as "Junior," who was active between 1970 and 1971. Pierce was indicted by a Toombs County Grand Jury for the murder of Joe M. Fletcher.
