Robert Castro, a 54-year-old Hispanic male, was murdered on July 5, 1997, in Colton, California. He was a drifter who was beaten to death with a piece of plywood in a rail yard. Though not officially charged, Ángel Maturino Reséndiz, also known as the 'Railroad Killer,' is considered the prime suspect in this case.
Reséndiz was a Mexican serial killer who was active in the United States during the 1990s.
He was known for committing murders near railroad tracks, often targeting victims at random. Authorities were able to link him to at least 15 murders across six states, including Texas, Kentucky, and Illinois.
At the time of his arrest in July 1999, Reséndiz was suspected in nine murders near railroad tracks. He was eventually convicted and sentenced to death for the December 1998 murder of Houston physician Claudia Benton. Reséndiz was executed by lethal injection in Texas on June 27, 2006.
