On the evening of September 3, 2025, Aldorthia Burrell, an 82-year-old Black woman, was on the front porch of her home on Balsam Avenue in the Jones Valley neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, with her daughter. What began as a peaceful evening was shattered by the sound of a nearby argument, followed by gunfire. A stray bullet pierced the glass of her front door, striking the beloved great-great-grandmother in the head. Rushed to UAB Hospital, she was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
