On the morning of Sunday, December 21, 2025, a violent confrontation unfolded at the Pleasant Village Apartments near Pleasant and Fedora avenues in Fresno, California. Around 10:50 a.m., the tranquility of the weekend was shattered when a ShotSpotter activation alerted law enforcement to nine rounds fired within the complex. Officers arriving at the scene discovered a chaotic situation where three individuals had been struck by gunfire during what investigators later described as an
interpersonal dispute rather than a random act of violence.
The primary target of the attack was identified as 35-year-old male Mariano Joe "Bones" Cabrera. According to homicide detectives, Cabrera and a 30-year-old man were confronted by an unidentified male suspect inside the apartment complex. The interaction escalated quickly, leading the gunman to discharge a weapon multiple times. Cabrera sustained critical gunshot wounds to his upper body and was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The second man involved in the confrontation survived, while a third victim, a 34-year-old woman taking out her trash, was struck by stray gunfire but was listed in stable condition.
Investigators determined that the shooter likely knew Cabrera, characterizing the incident as stemming from a personal conflict rather than gang-related activity. Despite the targeted nature of the shooting, the suspect managed to flee the scene before authorities arrived. As of the days immediately following the homicide, no arrests had been made, and police continued to search for the gunman, appealing to the public and potential witnesses for any surveillance footage or information that could lead to an identification.
