On the afternoon of December 16, 2025, violence erupted in a residential neighborhood of Indio, California, leading to the untimely death of 23-year-old Angel Ernesto Yee Mendoza. Around 1:10 p.m., police officers responded to reports of gunfire on the 47000 block of Dove Street. Investigations revealed that Mendoza had been involved in an initial shooting incident at this location, though no victims were discovered at that specific scene.
Following this first altercation, Mendoza drove a short distance to a residence on the 47000 block of Bluejay Street, where the situation escalated further.
Upon arriving at the Bluejay Street location, Mendoza reportedly engaged in a verbal confrontation with another man, Gabriel Salazar. The argument quickly intensified, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the two individuals. During the shootout, Mendoza sustained gunshot wounds and managed to retreat to his vehicle, where he subsequently became unresponsive. Emergency responders arrived and transported him to a local hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Police later recovered an unregistered handgun from inside Mendoza's vehicle and located multiple expended bullet casings at both the Dove Street and Bluejay Street crime scenes.
Detectives launched a homicide investigation and identified 41-year-old Gabriel Salazar as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting. Four days after the incident, on Saturday, December 20, 2025, authorities located Salazar in the neighboring city of Coachella. He was taken into custody without incident in the area of Avenue 51 and Filmore Street shortly before noon. Salazar was subsequently booked into the Benoit Detention Center in Indio, facing charges of first-degree murder and various weapons violations. He remained in custody awaiting his arraignment, which was scheduled to take place at the Larson Justice Center.
