In the early hours of July 5, 2026, the sounds of Fourth of July celebrations in a Fresno, California neighborhood were tragically interrupted by gunfire. At approximately 12:50 a.m., police were dispatched to the area of East Dakota Avenue and North Abby Street where they found 36-year-old Keith Breazell lying in the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Breazell was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident marked the 14th homicide in Fresno for the year 2026.
Homicide detectives learned that a large group of people had been gathered at the location for a holiday celebration just before the fatal shooting occurred. The festive atmosphere of the gathering was shattered, leaving a community in shock and investigators with a complex crime scene. Authorities began canvassing the neighborhood, seeking to piece together the events that led to Breazell's death and appealing to the public for any information. In 2005, Keith Breazell's father, who shared the same name, was also shot and killed in what police at the time deemed a gang-retaliation killing. The younger Keith Breazell also had a criminal history, including a federal conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case of Keith Breazell's death remains an open and active homicide investigation, with authorities still working to bring those responsible to justice.
