On the evening of June 16, 2026, a quiet suburban street in Alton, Texas, became the scene of a devastating family tragedy that claimed the lives of three people. Responding to a reported disturbance at a residence in the Tuscany Village Subdivision, police discovered a grim scene. Inside the home located at 3701 E. Roosevelt Avenue, two individuals were found deceased, and a third was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries, later succumbing to their wounds.
The victims were identified as 73-year-old Minder Kaur, her daughter, 46-year-old Kamlesh Rani, and her son-in-law, 56-year-old Sweeta Ram. All three had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect who had fled the scene before authorities arrived. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Gaurav Chopra, was the grandson of Minder Kaur and the son of Kamlesh Rani and Sweeta Ram. A 911 call from Chopra's brother alerted police, stating that his brother had killed their family members and had also fired a shot at him, which he managed to evade. Chopra was apprehended following a brief but high-speed vehicle pursuit that ended when he crashed his white Lexus near the intersection of 4 Mile Line Road and Glasscock Road. A 9mm handgun, believed to be the weapon used in the killings, was recovered from his vehicle, along with over $12,000 in cash.
Gaurav Chopra was taken into custody and subsequently booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center. He faces charges of capital murder of multiple persons and attempted capital murder. During his arraignment, Chopra was also charged with evading arrest. A judge denied him bond on the capital murder charge, deeming him a potential flight risk. While authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the tragic killings, the case has left the community in shock.
