On July 13, 2023, in Mission, Texas, 87-year-old Johanna Mae "Jo" Gould was found deceased in her home from a gunshot wound to the head. Her husband, 88-year-old William Gould, was discovered with self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the chest and under the chin. He was transported to a McAllen medical facility, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
The incident was reported to authorities at 8:44 a.m.
when William Gould contacted the police, stating that he had shot his wife. Upon arrival at the residence on the 2000 block of Amy Street, officers found Johanna deceased and William critically injured. A letter authored by William was found at the scene, indicating that both he and his wife were suffering from an illness, which is believed to have been a contributing factor to the tragic event.
Originally from Michigan, the Goulds had relocated to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Johanna was remembered for her passion for crafts, particularly quilting, and was well-loved by her family and friends. She is survived by her two sons, Dennis and William (Billy), three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her third son, Alan, predeceased her in 2016.
The Mission Police Department classified the case as a murder-suicide, with William Gould identified as the perpetrator. Given the circumstances and the evidence found at the scene, no arrests were made, and there are no other suspects involved in this case.
