Summary based on 3 sources
In the late spring of 1986, a 14-year-old male named Chester Ralph Wetmore walked out of his family's home in Bradenton, Florida, and vanished. The white teenager was last seen on the evening of May 26, 1986, dressed in jeans, a blue checkered shirt, and boots. For years, his disappearance remained a cold case, a source of unending questions for his family and investigators, with his official classification often listed as an endangered runaway. The trail for Chester grew cold, and with no significant leads, the mystery of his whereabouts seemed destined to remain unsolved. The quiet uncertainty surrounding his case was shattered decades later by a confession from a man already on death row for other heinous crimes.

The unexpected break in the case came in 2012, from a man named James P. Barnes. While being interviewed for Werner Herzog's documentary series, "On Death Row," Barnes, who was awaiting execution for the brutal 1988 murder of Patricia Miller and already serving a life sentence for the 1997 murder of his estranged wife, admitted to killing Chester Wetmore. In a subsequent letter to the filmmaker, Barnes provided more details. He claimed that he encountered Wetmore in 1988, two years after the boy was reported missing, and initially helped the runaway hide from his family. According to Barnes, the situation turned deadly when Wetmore stole something from him. Barnes stated that in retaliation, he shot Chester to death and buried his body. In his confession, Barnes also admitted to another unsolved murder, that of Brenda Joyce Fletcher in 1990.

Despite the detailed confession, the path to official resolution was not straightforward. Law enforcement, specifically the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, investigated Barnes's claims. They interviewed him on death row but ultimately found no credible evidence to support his story beyond information that was already public knowledge. Barnes did not lead them to Chester's body, and authorities expressed skepticism about his claims. Consequently, James P. Barnes was never formally charged with the murder of Chester Ralph Wetmore. Chester's body has never been recovered, and his case officially remains an unsolved endangered missing person case. James Barnes was executed by lethal injection on August 3, 2023, taking any final, unverified truths about Chester Wetmore's fate with him to the grave.
