Shahid Quayyum Ahzire Davis, a 19-year-old from Philadelphia, was on a hopeful path before his life was tragically cut short. Born on January 4, 1993, Shahid had a challenging childhood, marked by a few run-ins with trouble during his youth. However, he worked hard to turn things around, applying himself and earning a two-year scholarship to La Salle University. Despite graduating from Philadelphia North Academy in 2010, Shahid decided to delay his college enrollment for a year. During that time, his older brother was incarcerated, and Shahid also experienced the death of a close friend, events that profoundly impacted him emotionally. These difficulties, however, brought him closer to his mother, Tameeka, who encouraged him to pursue his education despite the setbacks.
On January 19, 2012, the day before his scheduled meeting with officials at La Salle to finalize his enrollment, Shahid went to visit the mother of his deceased friend.
After a warm conversation with his mother in which they expressed their love for each other, tragedy struck. While visiting the neighborhood in Kensington, Shahid and a friend were approached by two men who demanded money. When Shahid refused, he was shot and killed. The murder, unfortunately, remains unsolved to this day, leaving his family longing for justice and closure.
Shahid was described as a bright and lively young man who was compassionate and generous. He had a passion for helping others and was known for his sense of humor. His mother Tameeka often reminisces about little moments with Shahid, such as making him milkshakes to help him gain weight as a child or standing by a bus stop where a small screw Shahid had once playfully inserted into a sign remains as a symbol of his presence. Shahid also engaged in activities such as boxing and dancing, which kept him busy and focused. He was fluent in Spanish, thanks to the influence of his community and family friends.
Shahid's memory is kept alive through his family, who often reflect on his character and the love he shared. His mother takes solace in the resemblance her grandson bears to Shahid, feeling a connection to her lost son through the next generation. Shahid was laid to rest at Merion Memorial Park, and his family continues to hope for answers in his case. A reward has been offered for information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for his death.
