In the early morning hours of April 20, 2008, the city of Philadelphia was marked by a weekend of violence that claimed the life of Benjamin Elder, a 46-year-old African-American man. Elder, a hardworking cab driver for the Germantown Cab Co., was discovered in the driver's seat of his taxi in the 1800 block of North 20th Street. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the right side of his head and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers just moments after they arrived.
