Four months later, on November 11 and November 14 respectively, their remains were discovered in the Twin Buttes area, approximately 17 miles from where they were last seen.
Both teenagers had died from shotgun wounds, and the crime remains unsolved.
The case received significant attention during the "Satanic Panic" era, as rumors spread about the couple's involvement in a local cult. It was reported that both Shane and Sally had attended gatherings where occult rituals were allegedly performed. In March 1988, the two even handed over a firearm to the police, stating that it had been given to them by a cult member and had been used in a crime.
