In the spring of 2021, a burst of violence in Bessemer, Alabama, claimed the life of 21-year-old Deterrious Kieth-Bernerd Steele, a Black male. On the evening of April 18th, gunshots shattered the peace at Enoch Brown Park. When Bessemer police officers arrived at the scene on Berkeley Avenue around 9:41 p.m., they discovered Steele suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 10 p.m.
