On the morning of January 2, 2021, the quiet around Linn Park in Birmingham’s Central City was broken by a grim discovery. City workers cleaning the park near the south side found Chong Ku Hwang, a 56-year-old Asian male, dead near the 700 block of 20th Street North, across from City Hall. Early coverage framed the scene as a downtown death under investigation, and later reporting from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office made clear that Hwang had died from injuries suffered in an assault.
