In the evening chill of a Birmingham, Alabama night on December 21, 2021, Jequaris Jerryll McCann, a 29-year-old male, found himself in a fatal encounter. Just before 8 p.m. at the Marathon gas station on 19th Street in the Ensley neighborhood, a sequence of events unfolded that would end his life. He was discovered unresponsive in the parking lot, having sustained gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported him to UAB Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
