In the close-knit community of a Birmingham, Alabama market, the workday on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 37-year-old Cortez Dekelvin Ware. A male employee at the market, Ware was fatally shot during an altercation with a co-worker.
The Birmingham Police Department's West Precinct officers responded to the scene in the Smithfield community, where they found Ware suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
