In the summer of 2017, the life of a promising 19-year-old Black / African American male, Quoyai Shorter, was tragically cut short in Phenix City, Alabama. A recent graduate of Smith Station High School, Shorter was an aspiring basketball player with plans to attend Johnson & Wales in North Carolina. His journey, however, came to a sudden and violent end on July 28, 2017, when he was fatally shot. The incident took place just outside his own home, a place that should have been a sanctuary.
