In the line of duty, Birmingham Police Officer James M. Early, a male, met a violent end on Monday, April 15, 1935. He and several of his fellow officers were in the process of attempting to arrest a burglary suspect when the situation escalated dramatically. The suspect, cornered and desperate, barricaded himself inside a garage, initiating a tense standoff that would last for over an hour.
