Smith Owen Wester, a 29-year-old man from DeKalb County, Alabama, was killed on April 24, 1930, in a burst of violence that began with what should have been a routine piece of law enforcement work. Online memorial records identify him as a deputy sheriff with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and say he was part of a group of officers trying to serve a warrant on a man accused of stealing timber.
