In the fading light of a March evening in 1901, a long and dedicated career in law enforcement tragically neared its end in a Mobile, Alabama railyard. Detective Edward McGrath Morris, a 52-year-old man who had served the Mobile Police Department for a quarter of a century, would succumb to a fatal gunshot wound the following day, April 1, 1901. The events that led to his death began to unfold on March 31st, on the south side of the city, amidst the steel tracks and rail cars.
