On October 3, 2024, Alec Mathew Hugh-Sam, a 36-year-old man, was fatally shot at the Avalon Miramar Park Place apartment complex in Miramar, Florida. The incident occurred early in the morning, around 7 a.m., when a single shot was heard by residents of the complex.
A witness, identified as Tico, who lives in the apartment complex, reported hearing the shot and immediately calling the police.
He described the scene, stating that it was just one single shot, and then he heard a woman, believed to be the victim's girlfriend, screaming "Alex Alex Don't die!" as she attempted to give him CPR.
The victim was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital by fire rescue, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Miramar police and the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to the scene, establishing a perimeter and using a helicopter to search for the suspect. Officers with long guns and a K9 unit were also involved in the search, as it was reported that the suspect had fled the scene prior to police arrival. It is unclear whether the suspect fled on foot or in a vehicle.
