On August 19, 2024, Keith Bryan Poole, a 44-year-old resident of Pompano Beach, Florida, was fatally shot outside his home. The incident occurred at approximately 4:44 p.m. on the 1500 block of Northeast 28th Street. Responding to a shooting call, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue found Poole suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Broward Health North, where he was later pronounced dead.
The shooting resulted from an altercation between Poole and his daughter's boyfriend, 18-year-old Lawan Jones Jr. Jones had been living with the Poole family after his parents died, and Poole had taken him in as a member of the family. The dispute began when Poole discovered social media posts by Jones that he deemed inappropriate, including a photo of Jones holding a firearm. Poole told Jones that he could not have a gun in the house and demanded that he leave. This led to a heated argument, during which Jones threatened to have his friends come over to "take care of the problem." The situation escalated when Jones pulled a firearm from a satchel and shot Poole twice before fleeing the scene with Poole's 17-year-old daughter, Jessie Poole.
Witnesses reported that the argument intensified just before the shooting, with Jones becoming angry and eventually pulling out the gun. It was noted that Poole posed no physical threat to Jones at the time of the shooting. Following the incident, Jones and Jessie Poole were initially missing, causing concern for her safety among family and friends.
Lawan Jones Jr. surrendered himself to the Broward Sheriff’s Office two days after the shooting, on August 21, 2024. He was booked into the Broward County Main Jail without bond and faces a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm. Jessie Poole was safely located and reunited with her family.
