On June 24, 2024, Sacouya Starquez Jonquila Brice, a 29-year-old woman from Bradenton, Florida, was fatally shot by her cousin, Javontee Brice, during a violent killing spree in Manatee County.
The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. in the 900 block of 26th Street Court East in Palmetto. Sacouya had been at a cookout in the area and was getting into her parked SUV when Javontee Brice approached and shot her.
Witnesses identified Brice as the shooter, and he fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
When deputies arrived, officers from the Palmetto Police Department were attempting life-saving measures, but Sacouya died about an hour later at a hospital. According to Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells, Sacouya was Javontee Brice's cousin and had been at the cookout before the shooting.
Sacouya was born on June 23, 1995, in Bradenton, Florida, to Matilda Dubois and Johnny L. Brice II. Her death was part of a series of shootings that night, which also claimed the lives of Javontee Brice's mother, Titinysha Scott, and an ex-girlfriend's new partner, Charel Carter.
Javontee Brice's killing spree ended early the next morning when he was stopped by Hamilton County deputies near the state line. Brice exited his vehicle and began shooting at the deputies, who returned fire and killed him.
