On March 4, 2024, a tragic incident occurred at Eastwood Meadows Apartments in Gainesville, Florida, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Tyren Certain. The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. when Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to multiple calls from residents reporting gunfire. Upon arrival, they found a dark-colored sedan near the mailboxes with a subject slumped inside.
The investigation led to the arrest of 18-year-old Terrell Nicholos Weeks, who has been charged with first-degree homicide in connection with Tyren Certain's death. Weeks has a history of juvenile criminal convictions between 2020 and 2022 and was already on probation for possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent. He also has three misdemeanor convictions and a pending misdemeanor sworn complaint.
Weeks' involvement in violent acts is not limited to this incident. He was also implicated in a drive-by shooting that occurred in Gainesville around Easter 2023. In that incident, Weeks was reportedly in the backseat of a stolen dark grey Hyundai Sonata, and multiple firearms were used.
Following his arrest, Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered Weeks to be held without bail for violating his probation and set a bail of $50,000 on the new charge. The community and law enforcement have expressed strong sentiments against the violent acts, with Sheriff Emery A. Gainey emphasizing the commitment to holding individuals accountable for such crimes.
The case highlights the ongoing issues of gun violence and the cycle of violence among young individuals in the community. The incident has sparked discussions about rehabilitation, the effectiveness of current justice systems, and the long-term implications for both the perpetrator and the community.
