On February 23, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Opa-Locka, Florida, resulting in the death of 14-year-old Brianna Thornhill. The shooting took place inside the family's home at the Mirage at Sailboat community around 3 a.m. According to the mother of the victim, the shooting was accidental and involved her 19-year-old son, Keon Martavious Thornhill.
Keon Thornhill, who was visiting the home, had been showing off a gun when it discharged, striking his sister Brianna in the head.
Initially, Thornhill claimed that Brianna had shot herself in the face, but he later admitted to police that he was the one who pulled the trigger. He stated that the shooting was a mistake and repeatedly told officers, "I shot her. It was a mistake. Take me in."
At the time of the incident, the mother was at work, and six other siblings, aged between 9 and 12, were present in the home. After the shooting, Thornhill ran to nearby homes seeking help, knocking on the door of an off-duty Opa-Locka police officer. The officer immediately responded to the scene and found Brianna suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced her dead at 12:27 a.m.
Thornhill was arrested and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, facing a charge of second-degree murder with a weapon. During his detention, he provided several different versions of the events leading to the shooting, initially claiming a verbal dispute and then admitting to his role in the incident.
The community and family were deeply affected by the tragedy, with the mother describing Brianna as a "wonderful person" who was "very respectful" and "a sweet girl." The incident highlighted the importance of responsible gun handling and the need for parents to ensure that firearms are secured and out of reach of children.
