On June 14, 2015, 22-year-old Sriharia Aila Sai Kiran, a graduate student from Hyderabad, India, was tragically shot and killed in Miami, Florida. Kiran had only been in Miami for a month, pursuing a master’s degree in information technology at Atlantis University. On the night of his murder, he was speaking on his iPhone outside his apartment in the Little Havana neighborhood when he was approached by robbers who demanded his phone.
When Kiran refused to hand over the device, the attackers shot him multiple times. He was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
Kiran’s tragic death, initially believed to be a "mugging gone wrong," shocked his family and friends, both in the U.S. and in India. His case gained attention, and his family worked to return his body to India for burial. Investigations into the incident revealed few immediate leads, but over time, two suspects were eventually arrested in connection with his murder. The case highlighted the vulnerability of international students in the U.S., sparking discussions about their safety.
