In the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood of north St. Louis, a burst of gunfire shattered the late afternoon calm on May 10, 2024. When police arrived at the 3500 block of North Garrison Avenue around 4:30 p.m., they discovered the body of 50-year-old Darrick Rivers. A resident of the city's Hamilton Heights neighborhood, Rivers had been shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
