On the afternoon of May 20, 2023, tragedy struck in the Hillcrest neighborhood of southeast Kansas City, Missouri. Police officers were dispatched to the 8600 block of Drury Avenue following reports of a disturbance and the sound of gunfire. Upon arriving at the parking lot of an apartment complex, first responders discovered 23-year-old Donell James suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the arrival of emergency services, James succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
