On the night of July 18, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Fresno Police responded to a ShotSpotter activation indicating two gunshots near East Woodward Avenue and Ninth Street, close to Sequoia Middle School. Upon arrival, officers discovered 21-year-old Darius Lopez and a 19-year-old female inside a vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Lopez had sustained injuries to his upper and lower body, while the female had been shot in the lower body.
Both victims were transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where Lopez succumbed to his injuries. The female victim was listed in stable condition.
Investigations revealed that Lopez and the female victim were seated in their vehicle when an unidentified assailant approached on foot and opened fire. The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Detectives canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance footage to gather more information. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the Fresno Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
As of December 26, 2024, there have been no reports of arrests or identification of suspects related to the case.
