On the evening of March 1, 2024, at approximately 8:50 PM, San Diego Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 4500 block of Alvarado Canyon Road, located in the Grantville neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men with gunshot wounds in the stairwell of an apartment complex. The victims were identified as 31-year-old Joseph Taylor, a San Diego resident who did not reside at the complex, and 24-year-old Lavion Estridge, believed to be a security guard employed there.
Both men were transported to local hospitals, where they were pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigations suggest that an altercation occurred among a group of individuals near the apartment complex's pool area. During this confrontation, at least three individuals brandished firearms and began shooting. The incident is suspected to be gang-related, though the exact motive and circumstances remain under investigation.
On March 5, 2024, detectives identified and arrested 31-year-old Charles Burke as a suspect in the double homicide. He was apprehended without incident at a gas station on Rancho Bernardo Road and subsequently charged with murder. Further investigation led to the identification of a second suspect, 23-year-old Jacarre Easter. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and on March 12, 2024, Easter was located and arrested by the Hattiesburg Police Department in Mississippi. Efforts are underway to extradite him to San Diego to face charges.
Authorities continue to investigate the events leading up to the shooting, including the possibility of additional suspects. The San Diego Police Department has urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
