On December 31, 2023, at approximately 5:55 p.m., the Salinas Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter activation and multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting near Market Way and Soledad Street in Salinas, California. Upon arrival, officers discovered two adult male victims with gunshot wounds. Both individuals were transported to a local trauma center, where 36-year-old Mark Armenta Renteria succumbed to his injuries.
The second victim, a 37-year-old man, was listed in serious but stable condition and was expected to survive.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Salinas Police Department sought assistance from the public to identify the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting. Detective Byron Gansen was designated as the point of contact for any information related to the case. Despite these efforts, no suspect information was immediately available, and the investigation remained ongoing.
In the wake of Renteria's death, his family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses. The fundraiser, organized by his brother Jonathan Renteria, highlighted the family's grief and their appeal for prayers and support during this challenging time.
Prior to his death, public records indicate that Mark Renteria had multiple encounters with law enforcement. Notably, in November 2019, he was arrested on suspicion of possessing controlled substances for sale, among other charges.
As of now, there have been no reports of arrests or identification of suspects related to the shooting that resulted in Renteria's death. The Salinas Police Department continues to investigate the case and urges anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
