On the evening of November 27, 2023, 51-year-old Luis Valencia was fatally shot in central Fresno, California. The incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. near the intersection of Clinton and Drexel Avenues. Upon arrival, Fresno Police officers found Valencia suffering from a gunshot wound. He was promptly transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the days following the shooting, homicide detectives identified 18-year-old Philip Bautista as the primary suspect in Valencia's death. On December 5, 2023, the Fresno Police Department publicly announced Bautista as a suspect and sought assistance from the community in locating him.
On December 7, 2023, Bautista, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered to authorities at the Fresno Police Department. He was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of murder and firearm-related offenses.
