On the night of October 31, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., 18-year-old Ethan Chuefue Vang was fatally shot in Fresno, California. The incident occurred near the intersection of San Jose and Sherman Avenues, close to Wolters Elementary School. Upon arrival, officers found Vang with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries en route to Saint Agnes Medical Center.
A 24-year-old man, related to Vang, sustained a graze wound to the head during the shooting and was treated and released from Community Regional Medical Center.
Investigators have identified Vang as a known gang member; however, they have not yet determined whether the shooting was gang-motivated. Witnesses reported seeing two suspects, described as skinny individuals wearing dark clothing, fleeing the scene on foot immediately after the gunfire. Detectives are actively reviewing surveillance footage from the neighborhood and are seeking additional evidence to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Vang's death. The Fresno Police Department continues to investigate the case and urges anyone with information to come forward. This incident marks the 26th homicide in Fresno for the year 2023, reflecting a significant decrease compared to 50 homicides at the same time in 2022 and 63 in 2021.
Vang's family, who resided with him at the home where the shooting occurred, learned of his death through news reports and are seeking answers regarding the motive behind the attack. Neighbors expressed shock and concern over the incident, noting that the area had been relatively quiet prior to this event. Despite the tragedy, some community members remain optimistic about the overall decline in violent crime within the city.
Funeral services for Ethan Chuefue Vang were held on December 3 and 4, 2023, at the Jesse E. Cooley Jr. Funeral Chapel, followed by burial at Clovis Cemetery.
