On the evening of September 16, 2023, 57-year-old Hector Ascencio Sr. was tragically murdered at his residence in the 2500 block of Glenwood Place in South Gate, California. After returning home with his grandchildren, Ascencio heard a knock at the door, which he believed to be his son. Upon answering, he was immediately shot in the head by an unknown assailant, collapsing in front of his 9-year-old granddaughter, who witnessed the horrific event.
She promptly alerted her grandmother, and together they contacted emergency services. Despite their efforts, Ascencio was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation into the senseless killing. Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored, four-door vehicle fleeing the area shortly after the shooting. However, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, as detectives found no evidence linking Ascencio or his family to any criminal activities or affiliations. In an effort to generate leads, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of those responsible. The City of South Gate matched this with an additional $10,000, bringing the total reward to $30,000.
